Megan Hess – The Dress

megan-hess-dress-book

So yesterday, I was so fortunate to be invited to the lovely Fairmont Hotel on Palm Jumeirah to the launch of “The Dress” – a beautiful book of 100 iconic moments in fashion – curated with the illustrations of Megan Hess. The event was organised by the great girls from Think Liquorice, who brought Megan out to the UAE.

If you have not heard of Megan, just google! You will recognise her creative illustration style. I now LOVELOVELOVE her!

The career of the lovely Melbournian took off when Candace Bushnell asked her to illustrate the now more than in-famous novel Sex and The City.

This afternoon, Megan took time for press, bloggers and fans to sit down in the beautiful gardens on the beach of the Fairmont, chat about life in general and fashion in particular. She chatted with everybody personally and you felt you have known her for ages. She is truly stunning – inside and out. Have I mentioned I am in love with her?

So chop chop – off you go and get her gold leafed hardback book for your moments of inspiration!

Here a few impressions:

LOVEISM

“People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish… but that’s only if it’s done properly.”
― Banksy, Wall and Piece.

So I stumbled upon Street Art Gallery Dubai due to absolute boredom in Summer. You know, when it is 45 Degrees here and you cannot possible go have coffee in Dubai Mall again?! (not even talking about shopping ’cause you’ve blown your month’s budget – out of BOREDOM) An hour later I walked out in awe, inspired and with THIS baby by Erni Vales:

Street Art Dubai, the first Street Art Gallery in Dubai dedicated to Street Art, Graffiti, Urban, Pop Art was only founded in 2013 – so all fresh and Dubai is only just starting to find out about Street Art and that not everything is Graffiti!

And I have been back since….:

So to cut a long lovestory short, I went with my friend Marie to see lovely Yelena at the Gallery – we are looking for a venue for an upcoming exciting fashion event (stay tuned). And who did we meet there? Hec1, who was hanging out to set up his exhibition “LOVEISM in Dubai”!

Those who are not familiar with Hec1, here is a brief bio of his: http://streetartdubai.ae/w/artists/3017-2/

And here some of the artwork we came, saw and conquered 🙂

And if you fancy seeing a REAL Damien Hirst:

So head down there for the official opening tonight!

The exhibition is on for a month. And make sure to check back to new and exciting exhibitions every couple of weeks.

Motivation for the week

1. Everything and I mean everything you want to achieve begins with a thought…so allow yourself the time and space to daydream, visualize, and use your imagination to craft the most amazing scenarios of what you want your life to be. Get rid of the realistic and logical thoughts of what can happen based on your past. Thoughts are made of the living, breathing, creative energy that makes everything possible, so use your thoughts wisely.

2. There is no dream that is too big to achieve. Whether you want to live in a mansion, be a Broadway performer, or own your own personal island, there is nothing too big for you to achieve. I know this from experience. If you would’ve told me 10 years ago that I would marry my soul mate, have a family and a business doing what I love, I would’ve laughed at you. At that point in my life the dream was too big to even consider, but I now know anything is possible.

3. You have a gift and it is meant to be used, given, and shared in this life.Use it, gift it, apply it, but whatever you do, don’t waste it. Life is too precious to leave your song unsung, your book unwritten, or your dreams undone. Stop questioning if you are good enough, special enough, or gifted enough to do it. You absolutely are!

4. You are meant to thrive and that means doing great things and enjoying life. In fact it’s what life is all about. So, stop questioning your worth, let go of the stories you keep telling yourself about why or how or when you will be able to do XYZ and just do it already!

5. No matter where you are in your life, you will always be able to come up with an excuse to wait. Don’t. You may want to wait until you have more money, experience, time, courage, or when you are smaller, wiser, healthier or more mentally prepared, but the truth is there is no “perfect” time to do anything. Life changes daily and as long as you use that as an excuse to keep waiting, you’ll never begin. Do yourself a favor and start today.

6. Simple steps turn into big hits of inspiration that will open doors of opportunities you never knew were possible. This world is made of an intricate, seemingly invisible web that connects us all to amazing opportunities and possibilities. Your job is to take the first step and follow that web through your inspiration. A simple phone call, email, web search, or coffee date has the power to open up doors you could have never planned for in your wildest dreams. Baby steps lead to bold moves and big opportunities. So never be afraid that the steps you take are too small. Even the smallest act can create enough momentum to provide more progress than you know.

7. Your intuition is your inner GPS and when you are tapped into it, it will guide you along your path almost effortlessly. The formula? Do what feels good and right and perfect…for YOU.

8. You don’t have to know the “how”, the “when” or the “why” right now.Just trust that you will know the steps to take when the time is right and I promise you will be amazed at the resources, time, money, and contacts that arrive exactly when you need them.

9. Magic is real and so is your dream. Believe in it, trust in it, and have faith that it is coming together even when you can’t see the physical signs.

10. You are supported always, 100% of the time. There are people, friends, coaches, mentors, and others that will form your tribe to encourage and uplift you when you need it. Take the leap and know that if you need it, your tribe will catch you.

11. Taking a leap of faith allows the net to appear for you. It is amazing what positive expectations can do. It is true for me and it is true for you. Try it. Trust it. Do it.

12. Fun is important too! If I have learned nothing else on this journey it is to have fun and let loose. Being playful opens you to receive an abundance of inspiration, opportunities, and energy to accomplish your heart’s desires. So don’t waste your days sitting in an office trying to make something happen. Give yourself some time to laugh, play, and get curious about life.

Sounds like a plan to me!

So today is my day off. And with time on my hands I think a lot.

I have been studying at ESMOD Dubai since February now and I have learned so much! And I’m loving it. BUT. I am impatient. I’d love to start a job tomorrow.

So I have been updating my CV and have sent it (again) to some of the major players in the region, Chalhoub Group, Alshaya, MAF…. I was looking for roles in Marketing, Buying and retail related planning. Let’s see – someone might just give me a chance for me to prove myself. I AM GOOD!  😉  just have to come across someone who thinks outside the box and sees the potential I have and what I can offer with my experience.

Anyways. It will come.

Quoz Arts Festival

Boy, what a week!

Textile fair, London College of Fashion “The Art of Dress” Exhibition at A4 Space, kick off of the racing season at Meydan,  Iris van Herpen at The cARTel, opening of Pacha Ibiza Dubai and last but not least the Quoz Arts Festival.

The latter is on today until 10pm in the Al Serkal Avenue in Al Quoz and is a nice buzz with streetart happenings, alternative food stalls and special events at most of the galleries. And the weather is perfect now!

It was nice to head down there for an hour, meet people, see the creative happenings and feel the buzz of Dubai’s up and coming culture. Well done, Dubai! You are getting there in the end 😉

So – I feel inspired! Have a creative week ahead peeps.

Glitter in the Air

Iris van Herpen

On Thursday night I was lucky enough to be invited to the private preview of the exhibition of selected pieces of Iris van Herpen. It was held at The cARTel, a very cool space and fashion gallery in Al Serkal Avenue in Al Quoz.

The artist was there herself and you were able to get upclose and personal with her and some of her clothes cum art. Revolutionary! The curator compared her to Coco Chanel 🙂

One of the dresses – or piecesd – was worn by Lady Gaga. It was just amazing to see what happens if you push boundaries. Plus Iris Van Herpen seemed really shy and sweet. So no need to be all outrageous and out there to be creative as you might think these days following the latest fashion news and Instagram’s.

Head down the The Cartel until the 12th November, check Iris’ website, Youtube some of her shows andprepare to be amazed.

Elie Daab, Swaroski and me
Elie Saab, Swarowski and me

After my recent travels to Jaipur and Hongkong it was hard for me to come back to reality to the, well, limited fabric choices in Satwa. It’s not that you don’t find nice fabrics in Dubai, but you just find a wider range of nicer fabrics elsewhere.

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that th International Textile Fair is coming back to Dubai after a long silence.

It was a small exhibition at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, just one hall, but the quality of exhibitors was really good. Interesting fabrics, weavers, embroiderers, laser cutters etc etc hailed from mainly Italy, France and India to sell fabrics to the creatives in the UAE.

I have collected a lot of interesting contacts, some companies even have representations in Dubai. If you are interested please feel free to email me and I am happy tp share somedetails. You will be happy to hear that some work with small minimum orders.

I am posting some pics of some of the amazingly colourful options I found. Oh, and of course not to forget amazing Swarovski and its infinite sparkle options and their Elie Saab exhibit!

Getting down and dirty

Winter is looming and with it the skiing season. Well, not so much in Dubai, where you can get your 90 second spin downhill all year round indoors. Or take it to the sanddunes.

If you’re planning to hit the slopes, you’re probaly already searching the web for that stylish warm winter parka. 100% down preferrably for extra warmth and fluffiness.

I am not an avid wintersports person and have never thought much about this part of fashion. But one thing I feel passionately about is ethical fashion, protecting the environment and animal welfare. I knew about forcefeeding for Foie Gras, but never thought about the feathers.

I had a newsletter in my inbox this morning from Patagonia, who I admire very much for their active concern about how their actions influence the environment and how they can minimise these effects.

Head over to their website and watch the adorable skiing goose find out about the pickle its fellow feathers find themselves in:

Who am I?

Well, if only I knew…  The question of who I am has been plaguing me my whole life. I can’t pin myself down!

Right now I am an ordinary woman who took the leap of faith to fulfil her dream. I have quit my successful career as director of events and sales in luxury hospitality to become a student again. A student of fashion design, to be precise. And no, I am not 25 anymore (although I’d like to think I don’t look and act a day older than 29).

My BHAG? Become a womenswear buyer for an international retailer. Or work in the design team of an international designer. In London. Or New York. Or LA if you twist my arm.

Crazy? Yes. Definitely. But I have discovered that I have done what many people dream of doing. Quit your job and follow your dream. It is scary, VERY scary. Although I don’t doubt for a minute what I have done was the right decision to life my life without regrets, I am navigating in unchartered territory without the lovely monthly paycheck and no secure job prospect.

This blog is to share my journey with you guys. And keep you updated how I am doing.
